Thank you Indian Mounds Elementary students, Mr. Conradi, residents, staff, Leroy Pulles and friends that joined us for the Bench Dedication of Russell Sellers.
Indian Mounds Elementary School's senior friends, Russell, who lived in our Long Term Care, really enjoyed the children's visits, especially the kite flying. When he passed away a few months ago, his life partner Leroy left the classroom $200 to be spend on the children. Mr. Conradi, 5th Grade Teacher at Indian Mounds, used the money to purchase a bench for our classroom and a small name plate that says, "In memory of Russell Sellers. The students and teacher were very proud and humbled that their visits meant so much to him. In honor of Russell Sellers we will had a kite flying on June 5th with a dedication to Russell. Mr. Conradi said this about the intergenerational relationship between Martin Luther Campus and Indian Mounds, “I have to admit that when we first began visiting Martin Luther Campus two decades ago, my motivation was selfish. Being a 20 year old, I realized I had little life experience to share with my amazing “senior friends” and their vast knowledge and experience was an opportunity that was too good to pass up. Earlier this year we received word that one of our senior friends, Russell Sellers had passed away. I was sent a very kind note from his partner Leroy Pulles about how much Russ enjoyed our visits and a generous donation that I used to purchase this bench for our classroom in memory of Russell Sellers. Mr. Pulles had said that we could use it for a party or field trip but I wanted to use it for something that will last for as long as I am able to keep bringing my students to visit our senior friends, which will hopefully be for at least another twenty years.” Thank you Mr. Conradi for seeing the value in intergenerational relationships and to our senior friends for enjoying the visits of the wonderful children of Indian Mounds Elementary!

My son had been wanting to go out and fly a kite with his grandfather but I have been very busy lately. It can be really frustrating when you can't even accomplish the simplest of things because there's a lot of work to be done and there will be more crazy repercussions if you don't meet deadlines. Given a choice I would just like to spend time with children and loved ones in their senior years. I guess we really needed to learn at a young age to start working and saving for retirement early enough so we will have more time with our parents when they need us more.
